1996 Squiddy Awards

Comments from the Administrator (francis_uy@yahoo (Francis Uy):

Like the Internet as a whole, the Squiddy Awards continue to grow in volume. I received 220 raw votes, 209 after disqualifying invalid return addresses and some non-RAC'ers who voted brainlessly because a Web advertiser said so (i.e. put the advertised comic in a few categories and left the rest blank). If we commit exponential folly with statistics, the Squiddies will be more popular than the CBG Fan Awards within a decade.

Many Thanks to Alik Widge for coding the Web voting booth, to the Special Jury for agreeing on nothing, and to the numerous netizens who emailed me with eligibility and spelling corrections.

On the down side, this year's vote was marred by commerical Web campaigning. Next year's awards will definitely have formal guidelines for such activity.

But overall, I'm pleased with this year's winners. To quote Paul Estin, legendary RAC'er and former FAQ keeper who ran an RAC award poll in 1990:

Hmmm... I think if everyone bought as rec.arts.comics does, "independents" and certain DC titles would sell a lot better. Let's all take a moment to feel smug and superior. :-)

Creator Awards

Long-time RAC* favorites (and participants), Kurt Busiek and Mark Waid topped the writing awards for excellence on their multiple titles. There was no clear majority in the Penciler & Inker awards, but the Painter & Cover Artist awards were totally dominated by one man who worked with the two writers above.

There was mass confusion about the LSH/L* Creative Teams. I divided the 21 often contradictory votes as follows: Peyer only = LSH (1), Stern only = L* (12), both scripters = split 50/50 (8).

Book & Story Awards

When I suggested eliminating the Limited Series category, several people cried "where will I vote for Kingdom Come?" Apparently they figured it out -- KC ran away with the LS award *and* Best Story.

My changes this year confused some people, so let me restate: Astro City, JLA, all of Heroes Reborn, etc, count as Ongoing Series, not New or Limited. Those three categories are mutually exclusive, as are the awards for Single Comic (0-64 page original), Graphic Novel (65+ page original), and TPB Collection (reprint).

Speaking of Graphic Novels, it's kind of sad that there were only two major GNs last year, and one of them was just a Wedding Album. Heck, I had one of those! (http://gl.umbc.edu/~fuy1/wedding/) C'mon publishers, I want to see more long-form comics, preferably in paperback.

Strip Awards

As predicted over a year ago (when both Calvin & Hobbes and Far Side ended), 1996 was the year of Dilbert. Everything else stayed about the same, with the usual appearances by Doonesbury, Life in Hell, etc. The strong showing by Family Circus makes me nauseous, but hey, whatever floats your boat.

Miscellaneous Awards

Did Smash magazine campaign for the Squiddies? Hmm...probably not, but several other Web sites did, and if someone voted only for that site and its comic, and left the rest of the ballot blank, I didn't count the vote.

On a brighter note, congrats to all of this year's favorite RAC'ers. It's pretty clear that the readers like frequent posters who provide knowledge & reviews. I agree, online reviews are a helpful service, and I look forward to the separate rac.reviews and rac.fandom newsgroups.
